Founder George Oosterhuizen was studying for his final exam in 2001 and was frustrated with preparing for his operative viva in particular. He had 67 operations to prepare for the exam, and had books scattered all over his office because it was impossible to get all the information in one place. There were four sources for operative text, four sources for anatomy, and journal articles. He had hardly any video material, but what he did have was appreciated. "I thought how great it would be to have operative text and anatomy for each procedure in one place, together with a video. I wasn't computer savvy but made a note that I would look into it once my exam was over" explains George.

After six months, he realised his multimedia plus simulation idea was viable and started a company to advance the idea. He brought business and educational expertise on board, and set up a development team. The venture is funded by shareholders and matching funds from New Zealand government grants.
