Central venous catheterization

Central venous catheterization (CVC) is required for the administration of medication, fluid, or blood products, or other more complicated indications such as the insertion of pacing wires or endocardial biopsy equipment.

Learn how to perform an arterial blood gas (ABG) by seamlessly moving between the learning media; text, video, anatomy and simulator. In the simulator, learn how to perform an ABG in learn mode or test yourself in test mode by choosing medical tools with your computer mice and performing the procedure in a virtual environment. In test mode you may also choose multi-choice questions to test your understanding. Examine your performance in either mode in your personalized logbook and print this record for your own documentation.

Read a concise step-by-step description of how to perform a radial, femoral, dorsalis pedis or brachial blood gas. Steps are based upon evidence-based medicine and have hyperlinks to the relevant abstracts in Pubmed. Watch the procedure performed by an expert, and review the anatomical relationships of the radial artery, ulna artery and superficial palmar arch.

Simulate the procedure using either the radial artery, femoral artery or dorsalis pedis artery using clinically relevant case scenarios. Learn how to assess and position the chosen artery for sampling, how to insert local anesthetic, and how to obtain the arterial blood sample using a blood gas syringe. See how to tap the syringe and expel the air after collecting your sample, and how to place it in ice to send to the laboratory.

Central venous catheterization is an exciting module to advance your confidence in successfully performing this clinical procedure.
