Nasogastric tube insertion

Nasogastric tube (NGT) insertion is an essential rudimentary skill for all clinicians and nurses to learn. The NGT is a plastic tube which allows decompression of the gastroinstestinal tract, passage into the stomach for lavage or feeding, and diagnostic and monitoring assessment.

Learn how to perform a NGT insertion by seamlessly moving between the learning media; text, video, anatomy and simulator. In the simulator, learn how to perform a NGT intubation in learn mode or test yourself in test mode by choosing medical tools with your computer mice and performing the procedure in a virtual environment. In test mode you may also choose multi-choice questions to test your understanding. Examine your performance in either mode in your personalized logbook and print this record for your own documentation.

Read a concise step-by-step description of how to perform a nasogastric (NG) tube insertion or intubation, steps are based upon evidence-based medicine and have hyperlinks to the relevant abstracts in Pubmed. Watch the procedure performed by an expert and observe how to correctly insert and confirm placement of a NGT. Reassess the anatomy by studying a sagittal plane to identify the nostril, nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypophyarnx, epiglottis, vocal cords, and esophagus.

The NGT insertion module allows you to prudently practice insertion until you become competent for insertion at point of care.
