Virtually every patient admitted to hospital will require insertion of a venous or intravenous (IV) cannula and adeptness with this procedure can be critical for day-to-day care.
Learn how to perform a peripheral intravenous line by seamlessly moving between the learning media; text, video, anatomy and simulator. In the simulator, learn how to perform a peripheral venous cannulation in learn mode or test yourself in test mode by choosing medical tools with your computer mice and performing the procedure in a virtual environment. In test mode you may also choose multi-choice questions to test your understanding. Examine your performance in either mode in your personalized logbook and print this record for your own documentation.
Read a concise step-by-step description of how to obtain peripheral venous access with an IV line, steps are based upon evidence-based medicine and have hyperlinks to the relevant abstracts in Pubmed. Watch the procedure performed by an expert, and view the relationship and applied anatomy of the median cubital, basilic, and cephalic veins of the forearm. Rotate or zoom the forearm to see the pathways of the veins traversing the forearm.
During simulation, angle the needle to approximately 20 degrees, and use the click and drag or scroll wheel mouse function to advance the needle and cannula tips into the lumen of the vein. Observe a flashback and advance the cannula further into the vein. Remove the tourniquet, apply pressure and remove the needle from the cannula. Complete the simulation by attaching a plug and flushing the cannula to confirm patency with no extravasation.
The venous cannulation module elegantly highlights the importance aspects to help obtain a successful intravenous cannulation.
